Everything one needs to know about the conservative nature of Australian culture was on display in last night’s MasterChef invention test.

By definition invention means to create something new (or at least expand on an existing idea). Yet the winning team produced nothing new, didn’t expanded on existing techniques and produced food that any competent home cook could. The losers on the night attempted to invent but failed.

So who should ‘win’ when the purpose of the competition was to invent? Those who didn’t invent but successfully reproduced that which already exists, or those who stretched their boundaries but failed?

In my world the latter – always.
