I think I might become an ebook pirate! Well, not really, but given the recent decision by several of the biggest publishing houses to delay the release of digital editions for several months after (certain) physical editions hit stores shelves I fully expect a large number of people will.
I understand the reasons and motives behind this decision, and even sympathise with the publishing houses involved, but this decision will inevitably alienate ebook buying customers.
Eventually the sentiment that publishers don’t really share the love of books “with us” (instead being only interested in their bottom line) will reach the general book buying public.
The last industry to treat their customers with such disregard was the music business, and they went from being a (roughly) $40 billion industry to half that in a decade. I urge publishers and authors to be fully aware of the likely consequences of setting off down this path. Please don’t disrespect your customers!
